How do you start laying asphalt shingles?
1. Measure and mark the roof
Measure and mark all around the roof from eaves to ridge. Measure your roof lengthwise, Divide by 2 and multiply by 1.5 Add length for overhangs. Use that measurement to mark on the roof where you are going to lay shingles.
2. Set up your materials
What you will need: a power sander, spray paint for the shingles, ladders, a hammer, nails and stud finder/screwdriver, chalk (optional). We have plenty of tools available; we will assist you every step of the way in setting up everything so you can get on with things quickly.
3. Place starter strips
Start at the bottom of your roof and place the starter strip which is where the two pieces of shingles come together to create a seamless surface. You can start anywhere on your roof, but typically we start at the bottom or top.
4. Lay shingles side by side
Place the first 2 feet of shingle down on top of each other without gaps in between, starting with a starter strip. This is called "cutting in" or "stripping.
5. Build up row by row
Build up the bottom of your shingles, starting at the starter strip, working your way up your roof measuring as you go and cutting in each additional layer.
What do you put under asphalt shingles?
If you're putting underlayment down under your shingles, it's typically recommended to have a minimum of 8 inches (or more) of fiberglass insulation. If you're doing so, it's extremely important that you insulate the gable and vent the attic space which will be occupied by the insulation. If you want a new roof on your home or business, we can help! Asphalt shingle roofs last much longer than asphalt tiles roofs. Over time and with proper maintenance, asphalt shingles will provide you with the durability you need for many years to come.
